Costa Rica | Endless Sunsets and Rainbows

Putting the day to rest

Life is Good

This photo is the last of a few great ones that were taken tonight. Believe it or not, but I almost missed this. Sometimes I am so focused on what I am doing that I do not even know what time it is. And, since I have been in Costa Rica, some days I have no idea which day it is, never mind the time. Luckily my neighbor came bursting into my house tonight and asked if I had my camera ready.
Do you see this? Get your camera!
The first look from my balcony is a huge rainbow right before the sun is about to set.I took 10 shots of this and couldn’t get one good photo. This one was taken by my neighbor Matt Lowenthal. If you don’t know, Matt is the owner of Bindi the Costa Rican Wonder Dog. If you don’t love this dog, you are just crazy. After spending a few minutes trying failing to get a good picture , I turned around to notice that the sun was setting and starting to look beautiful

Why are you not here?

Brenda, How are you doing? Since you are in Florida you should visit Costa Rica. It’s pretty cheap from there. Then you can check out the 420 sunset..

the only time i was freaked out in costa rica was at the airport. it was late, dark outside, and my ride wasn’t there. strange people kept asking if i needed help. they thrust cell phones in my face or offered to drive me to my hotel. who are you looking for? they asked. where are you going? i just wanted them to leave me alone long enough to get oriented. it was very noisy and intimidating.

I hated my first trim to the airport as well. But, I did let them help me carry my bags :)

    Hi Jim,

I’ve got the same problem with my Internet service here in CR and I also use AMNET. Like you, a large chunk of my life is spent on the Internet and so reliability and speed are important.

Both of my sons-in-law and my stepson here are in computer/programming/Internet businesses and so I naturally looked to them for advice when I was trying to decide which way to go. Unfortunately, it seems there is no ideal way at the moment. As you observed, it’s a monopoly and until something breaks, it is what it is and the best of it is as good as it gets.

I hope you find something better. And if you do, I’d be very appreciative if you’d post the info her or let me know.

Bill, I will keep you updated if something good happens. I am happy right now with my Miami IP address and the speed is where I want it. But, who knows for how long.

I am waiting for Dec 14th and 3G. Then we can have some real net access with a 3g modem or an iPhone..

I agree with you in this context “It is true that most criminals who rob someone at gunpoint either have no bullets in the gun, or have never even used the gun before”.

How awful Jim. As you say, it’s just not worth going after thieves. Stuff can be replaced but you can’t get your life back.

My parents bought property in CR in 1995 and moved there in 1998. My father died there in 2004. Glad you haven’t been a victim of any crime in the year since you have been there – that hasn’t been the case for my mother.

My 76 year-old mother was the victim of a home invasion last night at her home in Santa Rita, just outside of Liberia, Costa Rica. Her car, television, radio, money, among other items, were stolen. There were three intruders who robbed her at knifepoint and then tied her up.

This is the second time she was the victim of a home invasion. The first robbery was in late July 2004, just 2 weeks after the memorial service for her husband who had died in February. During that invasion there were also three men who robbed her – also at knifepoint. In that case they stayed in her house 3 hours, eating her food and leaving her tied up. They threatened that if she called the police they would kill her.

We believe in both cases the intruders were familiar with the property leaving us with many questions about whether and whom to trust.

There is an under-reporting of violent crime in Costa Rica and due to the increase of luxury resorts this other “side” of Costa Rica seems to be under-represented. So many ex-pats live in gated communities and don’t really experience the real Costa Rica. There is alot that is wonderful about Costa Rica – at the same time it’s important to remember it is NOT utopia and like anywhere in the world, bad things can and will happen.

Thank you Sarah for sharing your story. I am truly sorry that your Mom has had to deal with these “all too common” problems in Costa Rica. My first surprise when I came here were all the bars on the windows, but now I see why. It can be hard to find a place to live where you can trust the security guards, who are probably receiving something for helping out with the robberies.

I hope that your Mom and you never have to experience something like this again. Please have a great holiday.

your poor mother, being tied up. it must have been terribly scary. i think if that happened to me, especially twice, that i would move to a new home. it doesn’t matter if its cr, san francisco or paris. i’d feel very vulnerable staying there.
