Broken Visual Editor for Wordpress 2.8 | Fixed

Problems upgrading to WordPress 2.8

Trying to be a smart person and keep my software up to date, I used the WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin to automatically upgrade to WordPress 2.8. Things looked pretty smooth as normal, but I had one problem;

When I edited posts the Visual Editor was gone.

This is not a huge problem because I work in the HTML tab more often (at least I finish the post in there). But, I do like to get a general idea that my code is OK by checking in the Visual tab. With this error I had to hit the preview button, which takes just a little bit longer. Anyway, I have found my problem and thought I would share the fix.

Fix Visual Editor for WordPress 2.8

For me I had two problems to resolve.

  1. Disable Google Gears
  2. Re-Install WordPress 2.8 Automatically

Disable Google Gears

I use FireFox; Click Tools | Gears Settings

Click Remove next to your site name and then click OK

Re-Install WordPress 2.8 Automatically

In WordPress Admin find Tools | Upgrade

wordpress-2-8-visual-editor-re-install

Click Re-Install Automatically and wait.. You should see this screen next;

WordPress 2.8 Visual Editor is Fixed!

!! UPDATE !!

From Bloggerbase Betsy – She did not have Gears installed and after re-upgrading WordPress it still did not work. She had to clear out her FireFox cache and restrt FF. Thanks Betsty! ;)

    Like you I also mostly use the html tab, however it bugs me when things don’t work how they are suppose to. I have the exact same problem, however I don’t have the Gears add-on. I have lots of others, though.

    I was thinking maybe it’s a plugin causing the issue and maybe an update will be coming soon. We’ll see if I get around to debugging it. Seems like that’s what I mostly do with my time anyway LOL.

    Yeah, that’s why I am trying to release as many plugins as I can. And create my own. Did you try the automatic re-install from Tools->Upgrade?

    I just did my initial upgrade to 2.8 that way. I haven’t tried downgrading and then upgrading again.

    From what I understand there is a problem with the initial upgrade and a lot of people are having that issue. Could have been too may users downloading and missing files..

    But, it only takes about a min to hit the re-install and test.. Good luck.
