Football Season has Begun

Here I am in Costa Rica and it’s FOOTBALL SEASON! Now, I love the NFL and can’t get enough fantasy sports. I haven’t purchased my satellite system yet so I am stuck with the local cable stations. This means that I can only watch 2 stations for the games. One is CBS and is in English, but the other is FOX and is in Spanish.

My Spanish is OK, but these guys on Fox talk way too fast for me to understand. I am subscribed to an RSS feed for AM Costa Rica, which is a American page about Costa Rica. They recently posted this article and I love it so I am giving some link love out to them. Below is text I copied from their post so you don’t have to go there, but you can visit the original article here.

Here is a list of basic terms used by the broadcasters;

abucheos – boos (noise)
acarrear – to carry a ball
acarreo – a carry
aguador – water boy
ala abierta – split end
ala cerrada – tight end
alineación titular – starting line up
anotar – to score
apoyador – linebacker
árbitro – ref
arranque en falso – off sides
atrapada –a catch
atrapar – to catch

doble marcaje – to have two men guarding one man

fuerza excesiva – unnecessary roughness

guardia – guard (lineman)

   I’ve been simply too busy to keep up with my sports this year. I’ll be heading off the deep end into Hockey Season soon though. We Canucks love our hockey.
