RSS – A Simple Definition

What is RSS?

RSS seems to be confusing to a lot of people that I talk to. Of course, not many of you bloggers out there have any problem understanding it, but some new bloggers still don’t understand. They just know that want to have RSS Subscribers, but are not even using RSS themselves. RSS gives you the ability to create your own newspaper with only the information you want in it. And organized the way you want. There is a plethera of information on the web and it is almost impossible to go to all the websites  and to read all the news.

This is why most people get one newspaper and read just that.

With RSS I can organize all of MY news on the web into sections. I have subscribed to many news sites and blogs to keep up with the latest  I am interested in and then I organized them into these sections;

  • Personal Blogs: Blogs from personal friends of mine
  • Security: Patches and Bugs
  • News: AP and Local News sites
  • Blogging: All the great bloggers out there that I like and learn from
  • Design: Sites to help with coding websites
  • Business: Financial information
  • Sports: My favorites here for NY Yankees, Boston Celtics and KC Chiefs

Google Reader

Holy shit, that’s alot of news to read!

All in all I am subscribed to over 500 different blogs or news sites. This doesn’t meant that I read all of them every day. Remember, RSS is just like a newspaper so you can check each section as you want to (when I am thinking about sports I am not thinking about design :) ) and read only the articles that are interesting to you.
This is why the TITLE is so important when writing articles on your blog. This is the first thing everyone sees and if it is interesting, can get them to click through to your site.

Well, time to check the news for today ;)

  8. I think in the beginning newbies see that 500 blog's subscribed to as a big number. Well it is, but if you've been blogging for awhile, this happens. They just might find it will happen to them one day, too.

It really isn't that hard to handle compared to the noise from Twitter. I like Twitter but sometimes it can be cluttered and I just want to unfollow everyone. But then, I also don't want to miss anything important…

I am starting to play with FriendFeed since Matt Cutts and some others are there a lot.

  11. I think RSS is a great way to inform like minded people about your blog and its new features. Any successful blog should try and utilize RSS.
