What is uSocial.net? Spammers?

Blog Surfing
My evening starts out like any other evening. All of my clients offices are closed and the chance of a serious problem outside of a natural disaster are very slim. I now have time to clean out my inbox and check my RSS feeds.
I have a wide variety of blog sources, all of which relate to my categories here that I write about (if you can call it writing). I write, and read about Costa Rica (and why I moved here), sports, some of my own personal experiences, Tech Support (various help articles) and of course Breathe Google (my soon to be great SEO info section), which I will talk about now.
It’s raining today in Costa Rica so I am just relaxing and perusing my tech feeds. I probably found this post from Eric Lander over at Sphinn ( is that ‘ph’ pronounced as an ‘f’ ? ), but if I am being honest I can’t remember exactly where I came across his very well written post “Protect Digg, StumbleUpon & Propeller from uSocial.net’s Spammers“.
A little about Eric Lander
When you first go to his blog, if you have not been there before, you will see this at the top of the article;

I did what you will do, continue to read and see what Eric has to say. Well, I can just about guarantee (unless you are an employee over at uSocial.net) that you will want to visit his non-verbose about page and definitely subscribe to his RSS feed. From his contact page you can also follow him on Twitter. After you read this post and check out some of his archives, you will be a loyal subscriber as I now am.
Now let’s get to the point, what the hell is uSocial.net?
Get Votes, Get Traffic, Get Paid!
This is the actual Trademark slogan for uSocial.net. They will officially launch on December 1st of this year and do yourself a favor and stay away. Eric’s post is very detailed and informative so I will not reiterate it here, please read it..
are ruining the social media for the people who enjoy the “social” aspect. For me, I enjoy knowing my friends over at Mixx.com are sending me an article that I want to read and discuss. I want to interact with my network on a particular article/subject and have that subject easily found. I do not want to sift through a bunch of articles that have no meaning to me, or anyone for that matter.
If you ask me, Digg is losing some ground at the moment to Mixx because the system has been tainted for a while now. Give them credit, they are trying to take care of the problem, albeit in a manner I don’t agree with.
What do you think about uSocial.net?
I have not put any links to their site on purpose, if you want to see their site type it in your browser.
Please help to Protect Social Communities

What you need for your Wordpress Blog
Sunday, October 5th, 2008[digg-reddit-me]
Get your own Domain Name
For these instructions I will suggest you get your own domain name. You can get a Wordpress blog without a domain name, but you have less control over it. For that reason I am only instructing how to setup your Wordpress Blog using your own domain.
There are many places to buy your domain name. For beginners and just to make things easy you can go to GoDaddy.com and follow the directions on the front page. It is very easy. First you search for a domain name that you like (I found thejimgaudet.com) and it is available you can purchase it online, just as you would a book from Amazon.com.
After configuring your domain name you will have to setup your hosting account. When selecting which package, make sure you select the Linux and not the Windows package. This will let you use PHP 5 and MySql 5.
Create the Wordpress Database
Once your hosting account is setup the next step is create the database that will store all your Wordpress information from your blog. You will create your database using the control panel that came with your hosting account. Be sure to select MySQL 5 for the database version, as you will get an option for MySQL 4 too.
Create Accounts
Here is a list of accounts you should have, and most likely have most of them.
- Gmail.com – You will need this for Google Analytics and Google Adsense
- Wordpress.com – In order to see Wordpress.com Stats you will need an account here.
- Feedburner.com – Do you want stats???
- Commentluv.com – If you have friends on your comment list, this can help new visiters check out their blog.
- Mixx.com,Digg.com, Reddit.com and StumbleUpon.com – Not needed, but a good way to get some traffic. Be sure to Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon your friends blogs.
- Yahoo.com – You will need a Yahoo email account in order to vote on Yahoo Buzz
Download Wordpress Plugins
There are so many plugins that these are in no particular order.
- Digg and Reddit Button – You have seen this on other people blogs (and at the top of this one). This allows people to see how many DIGG and Reddit votes this blog post has. And allows you vote for this blog post.
- Yahoo Buzz Button – This is the same as the Digg and Reddit but for Yahoo. You see this a lot too. A new service from Yahoo trying to be like Digg.
- Wordpress Database Backup – You need this. This will backup your wordpress configuration and post data. In the case of a server failuer, or if you just want to move to a new web host.
- Wordpress Automatic Upgrade – You need this for security reasons. Since you are hosting your own blog you have to keep up to date with the software. The developers at Wordpress keep the software up to date so you can be secure.
- Wordpress Stats – Everyone wants to know stats. Using the API key that comes with your Wordpress.com account you can see which posts have the most views and so on.
- Add to Any Share Button – With this you can help visitors add your blog post to Mixx.com, Digg.com, StumbleUpon.com and the rest.
- AdSense Manager – This will make it easier to put Google Adsense ads into your blog posts.
- All in One SEO Pack – This plugin will help configure your blog posts for search engines.
- Comment Image Embedder – If you would like to option for visitors to post images, then this is the plugin for you.
- CommentLuv – Use your CommentLuv.com account to fully configure this plugin.
- Feed Locations – This will allow you to change the default RSS feed locations to your FeedBurner.com account.
- Google Analyticator – Using your Gmail.com account you will connect your Wordpress blog to Google Analytics account. This will keep stats on all of your blog posts.
- Google XML Sitemaps – You will need to get a Google Webmaster Tools account, but it is well worth it. Then you can add the sitemap that this plugin creates automatically. Sitemaps help search engines find pages on your site that it may not have found crawling (although since all your posts have a link somewhere you shouldn’t need it).
- RSS Footer – This will add a link back to your post at the bottom of the post for all of those out there that will scrape your blog.
- Simple Tags – Manage your Tags
- Subscribe to Comments - Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries.
- Lucia’s Link Love - This is a variety of “dofollow” plugin. It’s main function is to strip “nofollow” tags from links in comments. Love your commenters.
What plugins do you use?
I have all of these plugins installed and configured, if anyone has any questions on configuring any of these I will be glad to help. Just ask in the comment section. Also, if you are using a Wordpress Plugin that is helpful let me know. I am always interested in checking out new things.

PLEASE!!! Stop Re-Shouting Me
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008It Hurts!
Shouting on Digg.Com
Here is the problem. You start using Digg and you like it. You can generate some traffic to your site and that is always good. But, you have to give a little to get a little. That means that we have to Digg for our “friends” so that they will Digg for us. If there are 100 Digg’s in 24 hours you can get on the front page.
Now, I don’t mind Digging for people, and commenting if I like the article. But I cannot stand when I get three or four emails asking me to Digg the same article. I Digg all requests from my friends and this takes up a good portion of my time.
Since I am the type of person who likes to help people, I am going to give you some advice on how to not piss people off on Digg and get them to keep you as their friend.
FireFox
First, and foremost you need FireFox. If you do not already have FireFox, please stop reading this blog. Internet Explorer just does not compare to this browser. It will only take you 1 day to get use to it. Just leave IE, please…Download FireFox here….
For those who already have FireFox, then go to this page and follow the instructions…
Finally
Once you have completed the instructions, the next time you shout on Digg.Com you will see the option to Friends not Dugg

GMail HTTPS Always On Feature
Saturday, July 26th, 2008[digg-reddit-me]

GMail has offered HTTPS for users who wanted to type in https://www.gmail.com. This method is slower, but more secure especially if you are using a wireless connection, at home or at a hot spot.
There is a new feature when you click settings after logging into your GMail. It looks like this;
Save and you are all set. From now on whenever you login to GMail you will use https.
